The danger was easy to miss because it looked ordinary. Here is the full list:

  1. Support uploads face cutoff

    GitHub has announced an upcoming security change that may affect GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) support bundle uploads. «Beginning August 18, 2026, GitHub will start rejecting command-line support bundle uploads from older GHES appliances that have not been updated with the required security patches,» GitHub said. «To avoid any disruption when submitting support bundles with ghe-support-bundle, ghe-cluster-support-bundle, or ghe-support-upload commands, please update your GHES instance to the latest patch release available for your current version line.» At minimum, the required patch versions are: 3.21.3, 3.20.5, 3.19.9, 3.18.12, and 3.17.18.

The common thread was not advanced hacking. It was borrowed trust. Each threat used something people already accept: an install, a permission, a familiar name, or a normal system feature.

That changes the job. The question is no longer only «Is this safe?» It is also «What can this do if it is not?» The smaller the action looks, the tighter its limits should be.

WordPress RCE, SonicWall 0-Days, AI Service Attacks, SharePoint 0-Day and More – CYBERDEFENSA.MX

A single request should not be able to do this much. But this week, small inputs led to code execution, memory loss, stolen keys, and disabled security tools.

The paths were often simple: exposed systems, weak checks, old drivers, fake prompts, and public code used for malware delivery. Some bugs were new. Others were already being used before defenders had time to patch.

New wp2shell WordPress Core Flaw Lets Unauthenticated Attackers Run Code – Searchlight Cyber disclosed a pre-authenticated remote code execution vulnerability in WordPress Core that can be exploited anonymously on a standard WordPress installation, without requiring any plugins or other special conditions. It is a combination of CVE-2026-63030 (REST API batch-route confusion) and CVE-2026-60137 (SQL injection in WordPress core) that can be chained to turn an anonymous request into code execution. watchTowr said it’s already seeing proof-of-concept (PoC) exploits in circulation and that it’s beginning to see the first signs of in-the-wild exploitation. «This is going to hurt,» watchTowr CEO Benjamin Harris said. «WordPress runs on hundreds of millions of websites globally. Some of those will be auto-patched by their hosting providers, but plenty will not, and that is where the damage will be done. Our advice is simple: patch as fast as you possibly can, and do not stop there. Put the controls and investigations in place to determine whether an attacker got there first and to detect and remove any backdoors that may already have been dropped before you patched.» The cybersecurity company said it’s the latest example of vulnerabilities being surfaced by AI-assisted tooling and how the technology is being abused by attackers to weaponize them.

  • SonicWall SMA Zero-Days Exploited as 0-Days – A previously undocumented threat actor codenamed UTA0533 has been attributed to the exploitation of recently disclosed SonicWall Secure Mobile Access (SMA) 1000 series VPN appliances as zero-days prior to their public disclosure since June 22, 2026. The discovery was made following an incident response investigation initiated earlier this month. The impacted organization has not been identified. «This threat actor was observed using multiple zero-day exploits, malware designed specifically for SonicWall SMA VPN appliances, as well as other attacker tradecraft,» Volexity said. The vulnerabilities in question are CVE-2026-15409 (CVSS score: 10.0) and CVE-2026-15410 (CVSS score: 7.2), both of which could be chained to facilitate arbitrary command execution and take over susceptible devices. Patches for both vulnerabilities were released by SonicWall last week.
  • DoS Flaw in OpenSSL – The Okta Red Team disclosed details of HollowByte, a denial-of-service (DoS) flaw in OpenSSL. «By sending a malicious payload of just 11 bytes, a remote, unauthenticated attacker can force a server to allocate disproportionate chunks of memory before any security handshake even begins,» Okta said. Put differently, an unauthenticated attacker — through 11 bytes of carefully crafted data — can convince OpenSSL to reserve up to 128 KB of heap memory for a handshake message that never actually arrives, causing a server to exhaust available RAM and trigger a DoS condition. The OpenSSL team resolved the issue in versions 4.0.1, 3.6.3, 3.5.7, 3.4.6, and 3.0.21. «Instead of trusting the header outright, OpenSSL now grows the buffer only as bytes actually land on the wire. A claim with no follow-through now costs the server nothing,» Okta said.
  • CISA Adds New SharePoint RCE Zero-Day to KEV Catalog – The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added a newly patched security flaw impacting Microsoft SharePoint Server to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, requiring Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies to apply the fixes by July 19, 2026. The vulnerability, CVE-2026-58644 (CVSS score: 9.8), is a critical deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability that allows an unauthorized attacker to execute arbitrary code. Patches for the flaw have been released as part of the Patch Tuesday updates released on July 14, 2026. Microsoft revised its bulletin to clarify that CVE-2026-58644 has been exploited in the wild, meaning the shortcoming was weaponized as a zero-day prior to the fixes becoming available. The development came as Microsoft shipped its largest Patch Tuesday on record, addressing 622 vulnerabilities.
  • OkoBot Malware Framework Infects Windows to Phish Crypto Seed Phrases – A new malware framework called OkoBot is designed to capture the contents of cryptocurrency wallet windows. OkoBot is an updated version of TookPS, which is a downloader for retrieving malicious commands and scripts from attacker-controlled servers to further propagate attacks, including a Python-based infostealer and a remote access trojan called TeviRAT. «This campaign differs from previous activity in that it uses a new framework to deliver all malicious modules and orchestrate them via an SSH tunnel,» Kaspersky said. «In total, the framework includes more than 20 malicious payloads and implants, covering a wide variety of functions. At the time of writing, the threat remains active.» The infection chain makes use of ClickFix and malware distributed through GitHub that masquerades as legitimate software for initial access. It also comes with a web browser extensions loader to deliver Rilide, a browser-based stealer, as well as inject an implant into Trezor Suite, Ledger Wallet, and Ledger Live processes to collect seed phrases, log keystrokes and clipboard content, take screenshots, and capture keystrokes and the video stream of the target application’s window using the OkoSpyware module. Hundreds of victims of the OkoBot campaign have been detected in more than 25 countries, with the highest concentration in Brazil, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, and Türkiye. The activity remains unattributed.
  • NadMesh Scans Exposed AI Services for Cloud Keys and Kubernetes Tokens – A new Go botnet called NadMesh has been observed hunting for exposed AI services related to ComfyUI, Ollama, n8n, Open WebUI, Langflow, and Gradio to steal AWS keys and Kubernetes tokens. «It folds scanning, exploitation, and credential/AI-service intelligence harvesting into a single autonomous platform,» QiAnXin XLab said. «On the victim, the bot agent establishes persistence along three independent paths: an SSH public-key backdoor (.ssh/authorized_keys), persistence files in multiple locations (/dev/shm/.a, /var/tmp/.a, /tmp/.a), and hidden cron watchdogs (/etc/cron.d/.sys_monitor, /etc/cron.d/.s).»

  • New Campaign Delivers Remcos RAT – A new malware distribution campaign has abused the credibility of government institutions to increase the likelihood of infection success. The activity targets Indian businesses and taxpayers using Goods and Services Tax (GST)-related themes to distribute malware. «The threat actors impersonated legitimate government departments and distributed malicious emails disguised as official notifications related to taxation, refunds, compliance requirements, and regulatory matters,» Seqrite Labs said. «The threat actors employ convincing documents and filenames that closely resemble official GST notifications, making it difficult for recipients to distinguish malicious content from legitimate government correspondence.» The end goal is to deploy Remcos RAT and steal sensitive information.
  • India’s Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Suffers a Data Leak – The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu suffered an accidental exposure after Reliance Infra (RPOWER) got hit by a ransomware group called World Leaks, a spin-off of Hunters International, which, in turn, is another variant of the Hive ransomware family. The leak consists of 18,997 files, totalling 14.3GB of data, per security researcher Rakesh Krishnan. They contain purported blueprints for the ventilation and cooling systems used in Unit 3 and Unit 4, along with a complete floor layout of a «common control room». It’s assessed that Reliance Infra was not impacted directly, but rather through a third-party vendor named Yotta.
  • Blind Eagle Shows No Signs of Stopping – Nearly a year after Blind Eagle’s activities were documented, a new report from LevelBlue has found the threat actor to be active, moving part of its VBScript delivery infrastructure onto the Russian bulletproof hosting provider Proton66 as of June 2025. The group has also devised a bespoke string-obfuscation scheme, a RunPE loader built entirely on a bare AutoIt3 interpreter, and an upgraded version of AsyncRAT that introduces Windows Notification Facility (WNF) process injection, a custom Base28 payload encoding, a full Hidden VNC (HVNC) banking-fraud module with browser profile cloning, and a Chrome App-Bound Encryption (ABE) bypass, per LevelBlue.
  • Qilin Ransomware Use of EDR Killer – Qilin ransomware operations have been observed adopting aggressive, kernel-level defense evasion to blind and disable endpoint security products before its main ransomware payload is executed on a victim’s network. The EDR killer, packed via the Shanya packer, is sold on illicit marketplaces for $2,000. «The EDR killer compares the returned locale to a known locale blacklist to avoid attacking any Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries such as Russia and Belarus,» Flashpoint said. «The EDR killer then writes a vulnerable driver to disk and loads this driver via Service Manager. This driver is the ThrottleStop driver from TechPowerUp LLC’s free and legitimate application of the same name, used to bypass CPU throttling. However, the driver suffers from a vulnerability, allowing the malware to map physical memory to kernel-mode virtual memory to perform direct kernel read and write operations.» Also put to use is a custom Rust-written loader that performs reflective Portable Executable (PE) loading of the ransomware payload.
  • DefiTuna Suffers a Security Incident – DeFiTuna, an Automated Market Maker (AMM) on the Solana blockchain, was exploited on July 16, 2026, for $569,601 USDC. «The attackers created a highly illiquid TUNA/USDC pool and used it as the destination for borrowed USDC routed through Jupiter,» CertiK said. «Because the swap returned only a negligible amount of TUNA, DeFiTuna’s value calculation rounded the position’s total assets down to zero. The protocol then incorrectly treated the position as healthy, allowing the attackers to bypass the solvency check and withdraw the USDC through attacker-controlled liquidity positions.»
  • Next.js Opts for Scheduled Security Releases – Vercel announced that Next.js is adopting a formal security release program, replacing ad-hoc patches for security fixes following a surge in AI-assisted vulnerability discovery. «This kind of scheduled, pre-announced security release has become standard practice for major open source projects, and we think it’s the right model for Next.js at its current scale,» Vercel said. «Here’s what you can expect going forward: roughly once a month, we’ll publish advance notice of upcoming security releases. Each announcement will include the expected release timeline and the highest anticipated severity among the vulnerabilities it covers. This lead time lets you plan your upgrades, and it lets us coordinate with hosting providers and other platform partners to deploy mitigations, such as firewall rules, that help protect applications that haven’t been patched yet.»
  • Disguised Gambling Apps Target Brazil – A new analysis from 9to5Mac has revealed more than 60 «jacket apps» on the App Store that are disguised as simple games and utilities that become online betting platforms when accessed from Brazilian IP addresses. Most of the apps are published by developer accounts with only a single App Store listing, with further investigation linking them to a «public GitHub repository containing instructions for a Cursor agent to create simple, vibe-coded apps that serve as fronts for the betting platforms.»
  • Ransomware Stats for Q2 2026 – The Gentlemen has become the most active ransomware group for Q2 2026, claiming 300 victims, surging past Qilin (289), DragonForce, Akira, and LockBit. Another group named Deadlock resurfaced after 11 months of silence with 75 June victims. In all, the top 11 tracked groups accounted for 1,368 of Q2’s victim claims across 99 countries. «What sets The Gentlemen apart is its packaging, where affiliates receive ready-made tools that ship and update faster than most competing programs,» ReliaQuest said.
  • 2 Members of Chinese Money Laundering Network Charged with Laundering $43M in Investment Fraud – The U.S. Justice Department unsealed charges against a New York man and woman for conspiracy to launder money derived from cyber investment fraud scams. «Between 2020 and 2022, Zhuoying Chen, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, and Haojie Zhang, 38, of Queens, New York, managed a network of more than a dozen individuals based in Queens and Brooklyn, who opened 140 bank accounts in the name of approximately 45 shell companies to launder at least $43 million in proceeds of investment scams,» the department said. «Then, Chen and Zhang allegedly conspired with China-based co-conspirators to transfer the funds involved in the fraud schemes abroad. The fraud schemes consist of perpetrators contacting victims via messaging services or social media applications. The perpetrators would initiate relationships with the victims and gain their trust, convincing victims to send money for lucrative investment opportunities. The perpetrators would show the victims fake profits on the purported investment and encourage the victims to invest more. The perpetrators would then steal the victim’s funds.»
  • U.S. Cyber Agency Uses Mythos to Audit Government Code – Reuters reported that the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is using Anthropic’s AI model Mythos to audit government software for defects that could potentially offer a pathway for foreign spies and cybercriminals, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Progress Tells ShareFile Customers to Shut Down Storage Zone Controllers — Progress urged customers to shut down Windows servers running Storage Zone Controllers, citing a credible external security threat. The company has temporarily disabled access to the affected accounts, a step it says it took «out of an abundance of caution» while it works with internal and external security experts. The exact nature of the threat is unknown. There are no indications of unauthorized access to any ShareFile accounts or data.

  • Critical Zimbra Flaw Patched — Zimbra is urging customers to apply updates to address a critical security vulnerability impacting the Classic Web Client that could result in arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability has been described as a case of stored cross-site scripting (XSS) that could allow specially crafted emails to execute malicious scripts in a user’s session. It has yet to be assigned a CVE identifier. «The update fixes a security issue in the Classic Web Client where a specially crafted email could run malicious code when the email is opened,» Zimbra said. «If exploited, it could allow access to mailbox information, session data, or account settings.»
  • Jscrambler npm Package Compromised — The Jscrambler npm package was compromised to publish multiple versions containing a Rust-based information stealer designed to steal developer secrets from Windows, macOS, and Linux machines. According to Jscrambler, the attack was pulled off using a compromised npm publishing credential. The activity overlaps with IronWorm, which was first documented by JFrog last month. «The malware has shed its Linux-only skin, deploying a three-platform CSI container to target macOS and Windows, expanding its persistence, and automating its own propagation via direct registry PUT operations,» the company said.
  • New GigaWiper Backdoor Detailed — Microsoft shed light on a new post-compromise backdoor called GigaWiper that comes with three distinct destructive ways to render a machine inoperable: wipe the whole disk, overwrite the Windows drive, or run fake «ransomware» that encrypts files with a key it never saves. In addition, it can take screenshots, record the screen, and launch a hidden VNC session. The malware artifacts are similar to another backdoor codenamed BLUERABBIT, which is assessed to be the work of an Iran-nexus threat actor.
  • SHELLSTORM, a Modern Web Shell Access Brokerage Operation — More than 1.4 million domains have been targeted as part of a large-scale operation that exploited 27 CVEs in WordPress plugins to deploy web shells on compromised servers. The largest number of infections have been reported in Taiwan, the U.S., Germany, France, and the U.K. The access provided by the web shell is then used to deliver the SNOWLIGHT dropper and the VShell backdoor. The activity has been codenamed SHELLSTORM. The activity is assessed to be the work of a Chinese or Chinese-speaking threat actor.
  • HalluSquatting Can Trick AI Coding Assistants Into Installing Botnets — While artificial intelligence (AI) tools are prone to hallucinations, new research has detailed a new iteration of slopsquatting and phantom squatting called HalluSquatting. The technique essentially involves registering legitimate-sounding resource names invented by an AI agent, registering them first, and then waiting for the assistant to run the malicious code embedded in the code. The attack pairs hallucinations with prompt injections to trick the agent into executing attacker-controlled instructions.

  • Compromising AI Gateways for Cryptomining — Threat actors have been observed compromising AI gateways such as LiteLLM Proxy connected to Amazon Bedrock services to deploy payloads that communicate with cryptomining infrastructure for unauthorized compute activity. Initial access to the LiteLLM Proxy EC2 instance is said to have been facilitated via internet-exposed SSH. «While the ultimate impact in this case appeared to be unauthorized cryptomining, the incident is notable because of where it occurred,» Darktrace said. «The compromised asset sat at the intersection of cloud infrastructure, identity, and AI services. The incident demonstrates why organizations should treat AI infrastructure as part of their critical attack surface rather than as a standalone application tier.»

  • Intrusions Exploit Citrix Bleed 2 — Threat actors are exploiting Citrix Bleed 2 (CVE-2025-5777) to deploy the DragonForce ransomware. «After gaining access, the attacker followed a consistent post-compromise pattern: escalate to SYSTEM through a registry-symlink/AppMgmt privilege-escalation trick, create rogue local admin accounts, and establish persistence with legitimate remote access tools like ScreenConnect and Zoho Assist,» Huntress said. «In the most advanced case, the operation ended with DragonForce ransomware deployment, which is why the blog’s main takeaway is urgent action: patch exposed NetScaler appliances, retain and review logs, terminate outstanding sessions, and audit for suspicious accounts and remote-management tooling.» The cybersecurity company said it observed half a dozen intrusions across unrelated organizations in the first half of 2026 using the same repeatable seven-step attack chain, indicating a highly standardized operator playbook rather than one-off compromises.
  • Fake Chinese VPN Drops GoodPersonRAT — An MSI file masquerading as an installer for Kuailian VPN (aka LetsVPN) has been observed dropping and executing an encrypted RAT called GoodPersonRAT that provides attackers with complete control over a victim’s machine and its data. «Several features are implemented, such as full remote control, keylogging, browser manipulation, persistence, and auto-updating,» Threatdown said.
  • Fake Braintree NuGet Package Delivers Skimmer — A malicious .NET package named Braintree.Net has been found to impersonate Braintree’s legitimate Braintree SDK while deploying a multi-stage .NET implant that intercepts live payment card data, exfiltrates Braintree merchant API keys, and harvests host environment secrets upon assembly load. It also facilitates token theft, avoids sandboxes, and implements production-only gating. «This split behavior allows the attacker to deliberately target payment data in production, while environment reconnaissance casts a wider net,» Socket said.
  • RedHook Android Malware Uses Wireless ADB for Shell Access — A resurfaced version of the RedHook Android trojan has incorporated new, sophisticated, and malicious functionalities, including autonomous privilege abuse, expanded command-and-control capabilities, and a robust persistence stack. «While retaining core RAT functionalities, such as screen streaming and keylogging, the latest iterations demonstrate a sophisticated shift toward privilege abuse,» Group-IB said. «RedHook abuses Android’s ADB Wireless Debugging features to autonomously obtain shell-level access.» Recent activity indicates an expansion of targeting beyond Vietnam to include users in Indonesia, suggesting a broader regional focus across Southeast Asia. The malware is distributed via spoofed government and financial websites, but the malicious APK payloads are hosted on reputable cloud and development platforms, including AWS S3 Buckets and GitHub repositories, likely in an attempt to enhance delivery reliability.
  • Phishing Campaign Targets Russian Aerospace Organizations — A spear-phishing campaign disguised as a legitimate business invoice targets aerospace organizations in Russia. «The phishing email impersonates a legitimate Russian research institute associated with aerospace and aviation systems and is delivered using a spoofed domain designed to mimic the organization,» Seqrite Labs said. «The malicious email contains a password-protected attachment that ultimately deploys additional payloads on the victim’s system.   • Helix Data Extortion Crew Emerges — A new data extortion group called Helix is employing voice phishing (vishing), device code phishing, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) abuse to steal data from SharePoint environments. Helix is said to have emerged from the BlackFile (aka UNC6671) and ShinyHunters (aka UNC6661) ecosystem. BlackFile has also splintered into Pink and Redact following its shutdown in April 2026. «In the kill chain, a single compromised identity served as the throughline from initial access to exfiltration. However, we have also observed what appears to be a tactical split,» ReliaQuest said. «A first user is compromised through vishing and used for data exfiltration, quietly enumerating and bulk-downloading SharePoint libraries over a period of days. A second user is then compromised separately, often days or even weeks later, and appears to be used solely to deliver the extortion message internally via Microsoft Teams and email. The second account carries no exfiltration activity. It appears to exist in the operation for one purpose, which is to post the extortion demand inside the target’s own collaboration environment.»
  • Microsoft Warns of Increase in Number of Windows Security Updates — Microsoft has warned customers to expect a spike in the number of security updates for Windows, as it uses AI techniques like MDASH to find more zero-day vulnerabilities. «The pace of vulnerability discovery is changing with advances in AI making it possible to find more issues, faster, across more code, with new mechanisms that can accelerate both discovery and analysis,» the company said. «The fastest way to reduce customer exposure is to find issues before attackers can use them.   • Caeruleus → Praetorian has released Caeruleus, a free open-source toolkit that folds the whole Bluetooth Low Energy testing workflow into one Go binary. Running on Linux/BlueZ, it lets testers scan devices, read or write the GATT tree, capture notifications, fuzz characteristics, and run security checks, replacing the usual hcitool, gatttool, and bettercap mix. Every command can output JSON for scripting and AI agents.
  • PhantomFS → It is a free open-source Windows honeypot that uses the Projected File System (ProjFS) to project convincing decoy files, credentials, financials, and SSH keys, into a virtual directory that lives only in memory and never hits disk. The moment an attacker or insider opens one, it writes a Windows Event Log entry and fires a desktop Toast alert with the filename, timestamp, and process context, giving high-confidence detection with no tuning, ML, or cloud.

PAN-OS GlobalProtect Authentication Bypass Under Exploitation – Palo Alto Networks warned that a recently disclosed medium-severity security flaw impacting PAN-OS and Prisma Access has come under active exploitation in the wild. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-0257 (CVSS score: 7.8), refers to a case of authentication bypass that could be exploited by bad actors to set up VPN connections. The issue specifically affects firewalls with GlobalProtect portal or gateway configured when authentication override cookies are enabled and a specific certificate configuration exists, the network security company said.

  • Critical Unpatched Flaw in Gogs – The popular open-source self-hosted Git service Gogs is affected by a critical-severity zero-day vulnerability that exposes servers to remote code execution (RCE), per Rapid7. The injection flaw can be exploited by authenticated attackers via pull requests with malicious branch names. «Since Gogs ships with open registration enabled by default and no limit on repository creation, an unauthenticated attacker can simply create an account and repository on any default-configured instance,» the cybersecurity firm says. Any repository owner can enable rebase merging with a single toggle in settings, and the entire exploit chain can be operated without interaction from any other user. Attackers with write access to repositories that have rebase enabled can exploit the flaw directly. «The result is arbitrary command execution as the Gogs server process user, giving the attacker the ability to compromise the server, read every repository on the instance (including other users’ private repos), dump credentials (password hashes, API tokens, SSH keys, 2FA secrets), pivot to other network-accessible systems, and modify any hosted repository’s code,» Rapid7 said. Gogs servers across Windows, Linux, and macOS that are running default configurations are affected. No patch has been released as of the time of publishing.
  • GlassWorm C2 Taken Down – CrowdStrike, Google, and the Shadowserver Foundation dismantled the GlassWorm malware operation by taking down all four of GlassWorm’s command-and-control (C2) channels simultaneously on May 26, 2026, at 2 p.m. UTC. GlassWorm, since its emergence last year, has conducted a «multi-pronged campaign» using trojanized VS Code extensions published on both the Microsoft VS Code Marketplace and Open VSX. The campaign is also known to have introduced malicious code through compromised npm and Python packages. By taking down all four channels at the same time, the action severed the operators’ access to the infected hosts and their ability to deliver new commands. Evidence suggests that GlassWorm’s operators are of Russian origin: the malware checks the system’s locale and avoids infecting machines in CIS countries, and its code contains Russian-language comments. In addition to taking down the GlassWorm infrastructure, CrowdStrike has instructed the infected endpoints to beacon to the benign IP address 164.92.88[.]210. Organizations are advised to check for connections to this IP address to identify potential infections. Despite these efforts, the broader economics of repository abuse remain an ongoing issue. Open-source ecosystems continue to offer attackers low-cost distribution channels with a massive reach when compared to traditional software. This also means operators behind such campaigns can resurface under new accounts, domains, or package names. In other words, it’s only a temporary disruption, not eradication.
  • CERT-In Urges Organizations to Patch Exploited Flaws Within 12 Hours – Organizations in India have been urged to patch actively exploited vulnerabilities impacting internet-facing or «crown jewel» systems within 12 hours, where feasible, so as to better respond to the speed artificial intelligence (AI) now brings to cyber attacks. CERT-In stopped short of framing the timelines as binding, describing them as indicative expectations to be applied according to operational criticality and threat exposure. The agency also warned that AI-assisted attacks are dramatically compressing the time between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation. The framework also recommends one-day remediation for critical externally exposed vulnerabilities, three days for critical internal vulnerabilities affecting high-value systems, and five days for high-severity flaws based on risk prioritization.
  • GREYVIBE Leans on AI for Ukraine Attacks – A previously undocumented Russian group codenamed GREYVIBE has been found to make extensive use of large language models (LLMs) in its attacks against private, government, and military organizations in Ukraine. The end goal is to gather intelligence for the ongoing war. «While the activities align with Russian state interests, several observed indicators suggest the group has ties to the broader cybercrime ecosystem, with the group potentially involving current or former cybercriminal actors,» WithSecure said. The threat actor is believed to have been active since August 2025. What’s notable is the extent to which AI appears to be enmeshed throughout the operation. The group’s use of AI is believed to be «operationally integrated rather than isolated or experimental.»
  • AI Chatbot Recommendations Redirect Users to Cryptojacking Malware – A new campaign is using searches for popular tools in AI chatbots to redirect users to sketchy sites that trick users into downloading booby-trapped executables that drop a cryptocurrency miner on compromised hosts. The goals of the campaign are not merely financially motivated. The threat actors have also been found to establish persistent remote access to compromised hosts through ScreenConnect deployments, which could then be leveraged for follow-on activity, such as data theft, lateral movement, or ransomware.

  • New Windows Flaw Under Attack – Belgium’s Centre for Cybersecurity (CCB) has warned that a recently patched Windows flaw, CVE-2026-41089, has come under active exploitation in the wild. The vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in Windows Netlogon that allows an unauthorized attacker to execute code over a network. There are currently no details on how the vulnerability is being exploited. The vulnerability was addressed by Microsoft as part of its May 2026 Patch Tuesday update.
  • Anthropic Confirms Mythos Release – Anthropic has confirmed it intends to bring Mythos-class models to «all our customers in the coming weeks» and said it’s «making swift progress» on developing stronger cyber safeguards prior to their release.
  • New Linux Flaw CIFSwitch Uncovered – A newly disclosed Linux local privilege escalation (LPE) vulnerability dubbed CIFSwitch has been found to enable low-privileged users to gain root access by abusing a logic flaw between the Linux kernel Common Internet File System (CIFS) client and the userspace helper package, cifs-utils. According to SpaceX security engineer Asim Viladi Oglu Manizada, the kernel-side bug has been around since 2007. A patch for the flaw has been pushed to mainline Linux as of May 19, 2026.
  • Dashlane Warns of Brute-Force Attack – Dashlane said: «user accounts were targeted in a brute force attack by an external party, resulting in the suspension of those accounts as part of Dashlane’s built-in security measures.» The affected accounts have since been unsuspended. The password management company also noted that it’s taking measures to address the issue, adding that there is no evidence of compromise of Dashlane’s systems. It’s not known who is behind the attack.
  • Global Smishing Operation Impacts 19 Countries – Hunt.io said it identified a coordinated smishing operation spanning 19 countries across Europe, the Americas, and the Caucasus. «The same infrastructure hitting Romanian taxpayers was also targeting DPD delivery customers in the U.K. and Ireland, road police portals in Bulgaria and Armenia, tax authorities in Greece, and T-Mobile users in the United States,» the company said. «1,628 malicious URLs confirmed active across 19 countries and multiple sectors.» The campaigns are designed to invoke a false sense of emergency using fabricated fines and trick users into making payments and entering their personal information.
  • Microsoft Teams and Google Drive Abused to Deliver Java RAT – An intrusion targeting a customer in the legal industry involved the use of Microsoft Teams voice phishing to deceive the victim into granting remote access via Quick Assist. It was followed by the deployment of a Java-based remote access trojan (RAT) named Nimbus RAT. «Nimbus RAT is a self-contained implant that uses Google Drive and Google Sheets for command-and-control (C2), helping its network traffic appear benign,» eSentire said. «From initial Teams contact to RAT execution, the attack took less than 20 minutes.» The activity overlaps with similar Teams-based social engineering attacks carried out by BlackSuit affiliates.
  • Tracking Site Visitors Via FROST – New research has shown that malicious websites can track visitors by measuring tiny changes in SSD access times as a side channel, turning normal browser activity into a privacy leak. The attack, named FROST (short for Fingerprinting Remotely using OPFS-based SSD Timing), is a «side-channel attack from JavaScript that exploits OPFS [Origin Private File System] to leak sensitive information from the browser without requiring any user interaction on both Linux and macOS.» The attack «uses SSD contention measurements from within the browser to fingerprint user activity on a system,» a group of academics from the Graz University of Technology and Liebherr-Transportation Systems GmbH said. «After tricking the victim into clicking a malicious link, an attacker can monitor the victim’s activity on the host system, such as website visits and application usage, without further user interaction.» The impact of the attack goes beyond website tracking. The study also demonstrated that it’s possible to fingerprint application usage, allowing attackers to potentially infer where specific apps were opened.
  • Instagram Exploit Allegedly Enabled Account Takeover – According to Dark Web Informer and ZachXBT, Instagram is said to have suffered from an exploit that made it possible to use Meta AI to reset passwords to accounts with no multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled. The exploit has since been patched.
  • EvilTokens Abuses OAuth Flow, RatPressto Kit Surfaces – The phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform known as EvilTokens is being used to carry out device code phishing attacks at scale. «These campaigns are notable for abusing the OAuth 2.0 device authorization flow, automating this sophisticated phishing at scale, and using AI to produce realistic, quickly deployable attack infrastructure,» Netcraft said. The company said it has seen thousands of attacks using the EvilTokens phishing kit. The development coincides with the emergence of a new phishing toolkit dubbed RatPressto that’s being used in an active campaign. The kit, hosted on legitimate-but-compromised WordPress sites, is used to serve ScreenConnect for establishing persistent remote access. «RatPressto has been observed targeting financial organizations, looking to silently exfiltrate credentials, secrets, and sensitive data that could be used to aid further compromise,» Fortra said.
  • Solo Russian-Speaking Threat Actor Linked to Patriot Bait Campaign – A solo Russian-speaking threat actor tracked as «bandcampro» ran a 5-year MAGA-themed Telegram channel (@americanpatriotus, approximately 17,000 subscribers) and pivoted to AI-automated content, fraud, and credential theft starting September 2025. «A jailbroken Google Gemini served as the actor’s co-worker, generating Q-styled posts, deploying infrastructure, rotating stolen API keys, modeling victim passwords, and running a QAnon-styled chatbot (QFS 2.0 Terminal),» Trend Micro said. «Safeguards were bypassed via jailbreaking and non-English prompting, allowing explicit pump-and-dump prompts and instructions to mutate victim passwords to be processed, showing how frontier-AI safety controls can be circumvented through jailbreaks and non-English prompting.» The campaign once again highlights how AI has significantly cut down the resources needed to run influence operations.
  • SonicWall Scanning Spike Recorded – GreyNoise said it observed a «significant new spike in scanning of SonicWall SonicOS management interfaces» between May 9 and May 18, 2026. «Approximately 56% of sessions originate from networks announced in the Netherlands and 44% in Ukraine – together more than 99% of total volume,» it said. «A single ASN (AS211736) carries roughly half of the total session volume.»
  • New Payload Ransomware Emerges – Cybersecurity researchers have analyzed ransomware families like NightSpire and Payload, with the latter already racking up 50 victims on its leak site since emerging in February 2026. «Although the group initially claimed only a limited number of victims, its operations quickly showed a global footprint, with targets across Egypt, Mexico, and Poland,» Dark Atlas said.

Vulnerabilities grew like weeds in 2025, but only 1% were weaponized in attacks

Otros proveedores, especialmente aquellos en el espacio de dispositivos de borde de red, se han visto inundados de actividad maliciosa durante años y siguen siendo el punto de intrusión preferido para todos los ataques.

Los dispositivos de borde de red fueron responsables de 191 de los 672 productos afectados por nuevas vulnerabilidades explotadas conocidas el año pasado, lo que representa el 28% de las principales tecnologías atacadas en 2025, según VulnCheck.

«Cualquier cosa que esté en esa posición de estar en el borde de la red, protegiendo el acceso a las redes corporativas, a menudo en un lugar privilegiado para una comunicación segura», es naturalmente un gran objetivo, dijo Condon.

Este problema se ve exacerbado por el hecho de que muchos dispositivos de red funcionan con bases de código que no han cambiado radicalmente en aproximadamente una década. Mientras tanto, los atacantes tienen copias de ese software y utilizan canales de análisis totalmente automatizados para identificar rápidamente nuevas vulnerabilidades.

«Los actores de amenazas están mucho más organizados actualmente que todos nosotros colectivamente en defensa», dijo Condon. Los defensores tienen que asumir que habrá un nuevo día cero en cualquier dispositivo de red en cualquier momento, y los parches se revertirán para el desarrollo de exploits en poco tiempo, añadió.

cada uno de los 50 vulnerabilidades principales VulnCheck señalado en su informe fueron explotados libremente el año pasado con al menos 20 exploits públicos funcionales, ataques originados por al menos dos grupos de amenazas de delitos cibernéticos o patrocinados por el estado. Las principales vulnerabilidades explotadas también estaban vinculadas a al menos una variante de ransomware y aparecieron en al menos dos casos de actividad de botnet conocida.

Cuatro de las 10 vulnerabilidades más atacadas de forma rutinaria el año pasado: CVE-2025-53770 y CVE-2025-53771que son variantes de vulnerabilidades previamente reveladas CVE-2025-49706 y CVE-2025-49704 – estaban contenidos en Microsoft SharePoint. Las cuatro vulnerabilidades de día cero fueron explotadas en masa e inicialmente comprometieron a más de 400 organizaciones, incluidos los Departamentos de Energía, Seguridad Nacional y Salud y Servicios Humanos.

VulnCheck confirmó un total combinado de 69 exploits conocidos para el cuarteto de vulnerabilidades de SharePoint. Los investigadores atribuyeron las vulnerabilidades explotadas a un total de 29 grupos de amenazas y 18 variantes de ransomware; sin embargo, los atacantes involucrados probablemente apuntaron a más de uno de los días cero, lo que resultó en cierta superposición.

Microsoft encabezó la lista con nueve de las 50 vulnerabilidades atacadas habitualmente que aparecieron en sus productos el año pasado. Ivanti fue responsable de cinco, o el 10% de las vulnerabilidades más atacadas el año pasado. Fortinet ocupó el tercer lugar en la lista de VulnCheck con cuatro vulnerabilidades, seguido de VMware con tres, mientras que SonicWall y Oracle ocuparon cada uno un lugar destacado en la lista con dos defectos explotados.

La vulnerabilidad más atacada de 2025 pertenece a React2Shell, un defecto de máxima gravedad en los componentes del servidor React que acumuló 236 exploits públicos válidos antes de fin de año, menos de un mes después de que Meta y React lo revelaran públicamente.

Más de 200 de esos exploits públicos fueron validados por VulnCheck a mediados de diciembre, cuando la Unidad 42 de Palo Alto Networks confirmó que más de 60 organizaciones se vieron afectadas por una ola inicial de ataques.

La investigación de VulnCheck subraya que la tecnología, en última instancia, en todas sus formas, es el problema.

«Estamos en un punto en el que no estamos hablando de un solo proveedor o tecnología. Estamos hablando de grandes cosas, estamos siendo derrotados. Governments issue warning over Cisco zero-day attacks dating back to 2023

Los atacantes han estado explotando un par de vulnerabilidades de día cero en el software de red de Cisco durante al menos tres años, y la campaña global está en curso, dijeron las autoridades a través de una serie de advertencias publicadas el miércoles.

La Agencia de Seguridad de Infraestructura y Ciberseguridad emitió un directiva de emergencia sobre los ataques globales y emitidos Orientación conjunta con los Cinco Ojos. para ayudar a los defensores a responder y buscar evidencia de compromiso.

Esto marca la segunda serie de múltiples vulnerabilidades de día cero explotadas activamente en la tecnología de punta de Cisco desde la primavera pasada. Ambas campañas dieron lugar a directivas de emergencia de CISA meses después de que se detectaran los ataques por primera vez, y ambas oleadas de ataques estuvieron en marcha durante al menos un año antes de que fueran identificadas.

Las autoridades se abstuvieron de atribuir los ataques a ningún estado nación o grupo amenazador. Los investigadores de Cisco Talos asignaron los exploits y la actividad posterior al compromiso a UAT-8616, al que sólo describieron como un “actor de amenazas altamente sofisticado”.

El «intento de explotación del grupo de actividades indica una tendencia continua de apuntar a dispositivos de borde de red por parte de actores de amenazas cibernéticas para establecer puntos de apoyo persistentes en organizaciones de alto valor, incluidos sectores de infraestructura críticos», dijo Cisco Talos en un aviso de amenazas.

La actividad maliciosa vinculada a esta campaña tiene un gran alcance y los atacantes han explotado las vulnerabilidades en sistemas específicos para acceder y potencialmente comprometer las redes federales, dijo Nick Andersen, subdirector ejecutivo de ciberseguridad de CISA, durante una conferencia de prensa el miércoles.

Andersen se negó a decir cuándo CISA tuvo conocimiento de esta actividad por primera vez y no proporcionó detalles sobre las víctimas potenciales, y agregó que los funcionarios están trabajando en las etapas iniciales de mitigación.

En la guía de búsqueda de amenazas publicada conjuntamente, Five Eyes dijo que todos los miembros estaban conscientes de que el día cero más reciente… CVE-2026-20127 – fue identificado y confirmado como explotado activamente a fines de 2025. Los funcionarios y Cisco no explicaron por qué tomó al menos dos meses revelar y parchear la vulnerabilidad, y compartir orientación de mitigación de emergencia.

Los atacantes están obteniendo el control total de un sistema en una cadena al explotar CVE-2026-20127 para evitar la autenticación y luego degradar el software a una versión vulnerable a CVE-2022-20775 para aumentar los privilegios, dijo Douglas McKee, director de inteligencia de vulnerabilidades en Rapid7.

«Ese segundo paso les permite pasar del control administrativo a la raíz del sistema operativo subyacente. Ese paso a la degradación muestra un conocimiento deliberado de las versiones del producto y del historial de parches», dijo a CyberScoop. «Esto no es un escaneo oportunista. Es un arte estructurado».

CISA agregó CVE-2022-20775 y CVE-2026-20127 a su catálogo de vulnerabilidades explotadas conocidas Miércoles.

La brecha de tres años entre los ataques iniciales conocidos y la explotación detectada de los días cero muestra el uso quirúrgico de las vulnerabilidades por parte de los atacantes y la naturaleza altamente dirigida de su campaña, dijo Ben Harris, fundador y director ejecutivo de watchTowr.

La línea de tiempo y la ruta de ataque conocida también indican una disciplina operativa que permitió a los atacantes mantener el acceso a largo plazo en la infraestructura de red crítica sin activar alarmas, dijo McKee. Esas actividades se alinean “más estrechamente con el espionaje patrocinado por el Estado que con delitos con motivación financiera”, añadió.

La directiva de emergencia de CISA requiere que las agencias federales realicen un inventario de todos los sistemas Cisco SD-WAN vulnerables, recopilen registros de esos sistemas, apliquen las actualizaciones de seguridad de Cisco, busquen evidencia de compromiso y sigan La guía de Cisco para el viernes.

La última campaña dirigida a la tecnología de borde de red de Cisco comparte muchas similitudes con otra serie de ataques sobre los que Cisco advirtió en septiembre. Esos ataques, que involucraron al menos dos días cero explotados activamente, estuvieron en marcha durante al menos un año antes de ser descubiertos por primera vez en mayo.

Cisco no respondió preguntas sobre posibles conexiones entre las campañas. El vendedor y los funcionarios también han evitado hasta ahora compartir detalles sobre lo que ocurrió detrás de escena durante estos ataques sostenidos.

Un portavoz de Cisco instó a los clientes a actualizar el software y seguir orientación de su asesor.

Desafortunadamente, es demasiado tarde para que algunos clientes de Cisco SD-WAN apliquen parches, dijo Harris. «El consejo de Cisco de reconstruir completamente y buscar señales previas de intrusión debe tomarse en serio».
